How Early to Arrive at Gatwick: Planning Check-in, Bag Drop and Security

Updated 19 October 2026

Use your airline’s recommended airport arrival time as your starting point, then plan your journey and parking around it. Arriving at Gatwick means reaching the correct terminal ready to begin departure procedures—not just turning off the motorway. Allow separately for unloading, any car handover and getting to departures.

Start with your airline’s timings, not a single airport-wide rule

There is no single arrival allowance that suits every Gatwick flight. Check your airline’s instructions for your route and departure date, including its recommended arrival time and the opening and closing times for check-in and bag drop.

Keep these deadlines separate:

- Recommended airport arrival: when you should be at the terminal to begin the process. - Check-in and bag-drop closure: the latest point at which the airline will accept you or your checked baggage. - Boarding or gate closure: when you must be at the departure gate, ready to board.

A closing time is a hard deadline, not a sensible arrival target. Work backwards from your scheduled departure using the airline’s recommended allowance, then add time before that for your journey, parking and walking into the terminal. Build in contingency for traffic, rail disruption and unfamiliar surroundings rather than relying on every stage going smoothly.

Confirm North or South Terminal before setting off

Gatwick has two passenger terminals: North and South. Confirm your departure terminal using your booking, your airline’s current flight information and Gatwick’s departure information. Do not assume that the terminal you used on a previous trip is still correct.

Choose the right destination for your journey. Gatwick’s railway station is at South Terminal; passengers departing from North Terminal need to allow for the inter-terminal connection and the walk to departures. Drivers should follow the signs and instructions for their intended terminal and arrival point.

If someone is dropping you off, check Gatwick’s current drop-off arrangements, payment requirements and vehicle restrictions before travelling. Reaching a drop-off zone still leaves unloading and the walk into departures to complete.

Our guide to [checking your Gatwick departure and return terminals](/guides/which-gatwick-terminal-departure-return) explains what to verify for both legs of your trip.

Allow for bag drop and document checks—even after online check-in

Online check-in can remove one task at the airport, but it does not remove every queue. If you have hold baggage, you still need to use your airline’s bag-drop process before its deadline. Some passengers also need an in-person passport, visa or other travel-document check.

Before leaving home, check that:

- Everyone travelling has the required documents and can access their boarding pass. - Your bags meet the airline’s size, weight and quantity rules. - You know whether oversized baggage, sports equipment or a pushchair needs a separate acceptance point. - Any required assistance is arranged and you understand where and when to report.

Keep documents accessible rather than packing them in a suitcase. If travelling with children, allow time for managing bags, pushchairs and toilet stops without using up the time needed for airline procedures.

Arriving well before a desk opens does not necessarily mean you can drop your bags immediately. Check the opening time if you are considering a particularly early arrival.

Prepare for security without assuming the queue length

Security waiting times vary, so do not base your arrival plan on a previous trip or a quiet-looking terminal. Once check-in and any bag drop are complete, proceed towards security rather than leaving it until close to boarding.

Check Gatwick’s current hand-luggage security guidance before packing, particularly for liquids, electronics, medicines and baby food. Equipment and instructions can change, and the rules at your return airport may differ. Follow the signs and staff instructions at the lane you use, including whether items need to come out of your bag.

Keep anything that may need inspection easy to reach. If you are carrying essential medication, check documentation and screening requirements in advance; our guide to [taking medication through airport security](/guides/taking-medication-through-airport-security) covers the main preparations.

With children, organise bags so that drinks, feeds and other items that may require inspection are accessible. Security screening is still required, even if you are running late.

Treat a Meet & Greet handover as a separate step

With Meet & Greet parking, you hand your car and keys to a driver at the location specified in your booking. The car is then parked while you continue to the terminal. The exact meeting point, contact procedure and return arrangements depend on the booked product.

Schedule the handover before the time you need to be inside departures. Allow for locating the meeting point, unloading passengers and luggage, completing the handover and walking to check-in or security. Do not assume a terminal drop-off zone is also your parking meeting point.

Read your confirmation before travelling and follow any instructions about calling ahead. Have your booking details ready, and remove passports, medicines, boarding passes and everything you need for the flight before handing over the keys.

Gatwick Meet & Greet products listed on this site operate from 04:00–23:00 daily. Check that your intended handover and return collection fit those hours. For more on the process, see [what happens at a Meet & Greet parking handover](/guides/how-does-meet-and-greet-parking-work).

Leave time after security to reach the gate

Passing security does not mean you are ready to board. You still need to check the departure screens, find your gate and walk there. The distance depends on the gate assigned to your flight, so avoid planning around a fixed walking time.

Check the screens before stopping for food or shopping, and follow the airline’s instruction about when to be at the gate. Keep monitoring flight information rather than relying only on announcements.

Before setting off for Gatwick, make one final check of your flight status, terminal, travel disruption and parking or drop-off instructions. If the flight is delayed, do not assume check-in or bag-drop deadlines have moved: follow the airline’s explicit advice. If you are running late, contact the airline and, where relevant, your parking provider rather than assuming either can extend a deadline.

Frequently asked questions

Can I arrive later at Gatwick with hand luggage only?
Hand luggage only may let you bypass bag drop if you have checked in and have a valid boarding pass. However, you still need time for any required document checks, security and the walk to your gate. Follow your airline’s recommended arrival time rather than subtracting an assumed bag-drop allowance.
Does my Gatwick arrival time include parking?
Plan to be at the correct terminal, ready to start departure procedures, by your airline’s recommended arrival time. Allow separately beforehand for parking or a car handover, unloading and walking into departures.
Should I arrive later if my Gatwick flight is delayed?
Only if your airline specifically tells you to. A later estimated departure does not necessarily change check-in, bag-drop or boarding requirements, and the estimated delay can change.
How early should I arrive for the first flight of the morning?
Use your airline’s instructions for that flight and confirm when its check-in or bag-drop facilities open. Check that your transport and any parking handover arrangements work with the required arrival time. An early departure does not guarantee short queues.
