Return Flight Diverted to Another Airport: Getting Back to Your Car
Updated 3 November 2026
If your return flight lands at a different airport, confirm the airline’s onward travel plan before arranging your own journey. Then tell your parking provider that your arrival has changed. Your flight’s new landing time is not your car collection time: allow for baggage, the journey between airports and the agreed handover arrangements.
1. Find out whether you will continue flying or leave the airport
A diversion does not always mean your flight has finished. The aircraft may continue to the original destination, or the airline may arrange onward travel from the diversion airport. Follow the crew’s instructions and wait for confirmation before booking transport.
Ask the airline or its ground-handling team: - Is this the final arrival airport, or will the flight continue? - Where should passengers go for onward travel information? - Is transport being arranged, and exactly where will it finish? - What help is available if the journey cannot continue until the next day?
Explain that your car is at the original airport. Transport to a city centre or another terminal may still leave you with a further journey to your collection point. If there is no staffed desk, use the airline’s app, messaging service or published contact number. Keep copies of instructions and disruption notifications.
2. Confirm baggage and assistance arrangements before leaving
Do not assume checked bags will appear at the diversion airport. Ask whether they will be unloaded there, remain on the aircraft or travel separately to the original destination. If you leave without a bag that should have arrived, report it to the airline’s baggage handler and obtain a reference before leaving the reclaim area. Our guide to [reporting delayed or lost baggage](/guides/lost-delayed-baggage-uk-airports) explains what details to keep.
Follow local instructions for passport control and customs. If the aircraft lands in another country, ask the airline what immigration requirements apply before making an independent onward journey.
Tell staff promptly if you need mobility assistance, access to medication or help travelling with children. Confirm whether onward transport can accommodate your wheelchair, luggage and family. If your child’s car seat is in your parked car or checked baggage, raise that before accepting or booking a vehicle transfer. See our advice on [travelling with car seats and pushchairs](/guides/flying-with-pushchair-car-seat) for baggage and handover considerations.
3. Update your Meet & Greet parking provider
Use the return contact details in your parking confirmation. Contact the team responsible for returning your car, rather than assuming the airline or booking website will pass on the change.
Give them your booking reference, vehicle registration, original return flight, diversion airport and current travel plan. If you do not yet know when you will reach the original airport, say so and ask when to update them again.
Confirm: - Whether your booking needs extending and whether additional charges apply. - The revised collection date, terminal and authorised meeting point. - How much notice the return team needs before bringing your car. - What happens if you reach the airport after operating hours.
For Meet & Greet services listed on this site, Luton operates 24 hours; Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Manchester operate 04:00–23:00 daily. Agree the revised handover with the provider rather than assuming an out-of-hours collection is possible.
Meet & Greet means your vehicle is returned at an agreed handover location; it does not automatically include delivery to a different airport. Flight monitoring also does not replace telling the provider how you will travel back after a diversion. Read [how Meet & Greet handovers work](/guides/how-does-meet-and-greet-parking-work) if you need to check the usual return process.
4. Agree onward transport before paying for it yourself
Ask the airline what it will arrange or authorise before booking a taxi, train or hotel. For flights covered by UK passenger-rights rules, where an airline offers arrival at an alternative airport serving the same town, city or region, it must cover transport to the originally booked airport or another nearby destination agreed with you. A diversion further away needs clarification of the airline’s onward travel arrangements; do not assume every independently booked journey will be reimbursed.
If no workable arrangement is available, record your attempts to contact the airline and keep evidence of the options offered. Choose a reasonable journey for your circumstances and retain itemised receipts. Written approval is useful, but reimbursement is not automatic simply because you have a receipt.
Before setting off, check the exact destination, service status, luggage capacity and accessibility. A journey to the airport station may still require movement within the airport to reach your agreed car handover point. Tell your parking provider your realistic arrival estimate once transport is confirmed.
5. Reconfirm the collection point when you reach the airport
Follow your provider’s return instructions and call at the agreed stage of your journey. Do not use the diverted flight’s landing time as the signal to request your car if you are still at another airport.
Confirm the terminal, level and designated meeting area before walking there. Do not wait in a drop-off zone or roadside area unless it is the agreed, permitted handover location; local access rules and charges still apply during disruption.
If the airline brings you to a different terminal, ask the provider whether the collection point can change before moving between terminals. Our guide to [different departure and return terminals at Heathrow](/guides/heathrow-different-departure-arrival-terminals) covers that specific situation.
If you are too tired to drive safely, discuss a later collection and any booking extension rather than rushing to get home.
6. Keep parking costs separate from airline expense claims
Save your parking confirmation, revised collection agreement, any extension invoice, transport receipts and airline messages. Make a short timeline showing the diversion, the help offered and when you reached the original airport.
Extra parking charges are not automatically refundable by the airline. Ask its claims team whether those costs are covered, and check any travel insurance policy for relevant cover, exclusions and evidence requirements.
Compensation for disruption is separate from assistance and expense reimbursement. Eligibility depends on the applicable passenger-rights rules, the cause of the disruption and the delay to your final destination. Bad weather may affect compensation entitlement without necessarily removing the airline’s duty to provide assistance. Use the airline’s claims process and current UK Civil Aviation Authority guidance rather than assuming that a diversion guarantees a payment.
Frequently asked questions
- Can my Meet & Greet provider deliver my car to the diversion airport?
- Do not assume so. Your booking covers an agreed return location, and delivery elsewhere would need explicit agreement from the provider. Ask whether any change is possible and what conditions or charges would apply before relying on it.
- What if I cannot reach my car before the parking service closes?
- Contact the provider as soon as this looks likely. Agree the next available handover, ask whether the booking must be extended and confirm any additional charges. Separately, ask the airline what overnight assistance is available; do not assume accommodation or extra parking will automatically be reimbursed.
- Can someone else collect my car while I travel home from the diversion airport?
- Ask the parking provider first. It may require your written authorisation, identification or other checks before releasing the vehicle. The person collecting it must also have a valid licence and appropriate insurance to drive it. Do not send someone without confirming the release arrangements.
- Should I wait for delayed baggage before returning to my car?
- Ask the baggage handler whether your bag is expected shortly or will be delivered later. If you leave without it, make sure the missing-bag report and delivery contact details are complete. Keep your parking provider updated if waiting changes your collection time.
